Monolights Vs Powerpacks with Flash Heads
Monolights are self contained professional strobes.
A monolight includes in one enclosure the flash tube, the modeling lamp and the control power unit.
Those strobes can be powered by main and they are usually named as “studio strobes”. in some cases monolights can be battery operated and they are often called portable strobes or simply “battery powered” monolights.
Please note not all strobes operated by main can be also used with a battery and viceversa.
At the beginning all studio strobes were built with two components: the lamphead and the power unit (powerpack). You can still find this strobe configuration and it is very useful everytime you need a lightweight flash head. Indeed the powerpack is containing the bulky components and sometimes can be little bit challenging to held a powerful unit on a boom arm.
That’s why powerpacks with a separate lamp head are still useful when you need to have a light over your subject or if you need a very powerful strobe light
